Hillman Family

It’s a family affair!

Randy started working in the restaurant industry at only 13. Not knowing he would be in the industry for life, Randy scrubbed pots and pans as a young junior high school student at a local truck stop. He was quickly promoted to management—in only a year and a half. Shortly thereafter, one of Randy's managers offered him a management job a new restaurant the manager was starting. Randy told him, "Yes, but I want to be an owner not just a manager.”  His manager agreed and the two opened the restaurant together.  The restaurant flourished: a former major US senator even announced his candidacy at the restaurant. Several years later, Randy bought out his business parter and became sole proprietor of the restaurant.

Dawn came into the picture when she applied for a serving job at the Roll'n Pin while attending college at Augustana University.  Suffice it to say, she got more than a serving job; she captured Randy's heart. Dawn is from Colton, South Dakota, and comes from a huge, supportive family. Bringing that good midwestern, country work ethic to the table, she wears many hats: from server to book-keeper to manager, she certainly stays busy. To be certain, she provides the solid foundation upon which the family and business are built.

Randy has a daughter and son from a previous high school marriage, who live in the twin cities. They are a wonderful part of the family, though we don’t get to see them as often as we’d like. Dawn & Randy have three sons: Michael, Matthew, and Markus. Matt and Mark went to South Dakota State University and are mechanical engineers.

Michael stayed in the family business. He has worked in the restaurant ever since he can remember. In fact—and we can’t make this up—his first word was the infant pronunciation of restaurant: “whest-want.” At the time, little did Randy & Dawn know that infant Mike’s skipping of the words “mama” & “dada” foretold their own future in that Mike would become their future boss, as it were. Indeed, Mike spent a great deal of time at the restaurant while growing up and loved socializing with “regulars—he even had his own cubby in the coffee counter/bar filled with board games to play with them. Yet, it wasn’t all fun and games. Randy & Dawn instilled a strong small-family-business work ethic in all their kids. Growing up, Mike washed dishes as a child (while standing on buckets), then learned to use the register and count cash, then became a server, and finally a manager. He attended college at the University of South Dakota with a degree in Business Administration with a Human Resources specialization.

Together, Randy, Dawn, and Mike have achieved what few restaurants can do: celebrate over 45 years of continued success. Working nearly every day, you'll surely see Randy, Dawn, or Mike.
